What does a University technician do?
Our technicians work at the heart of groundbreaking research and/or education. One day, you might be meticulously calibrating advanced scientific instruments, the next, designing and manufacturing bespoke equipment for a pioneering experiment. You'll collaborate with world-leading academics and play a crucial role in developing the next generation by working directly with our students; guiding them through complex procedures, sharing your practical knowledge, and contributing to their learning journey. Your work will be diverse and impactful, enabling innovation and ensuring the smooth operation of vital university infrastructure.
What skills and experience do I need to be a University Technician?

A University technician typically needs a blend of practical skills, technical knowledge, and interpersonal abilities, for example:
- Technical knowledge: For example in relation to relevant equipment, software, or techniques specific to the field, such as lab equipment, and IT systems. The level of expertise required will vary depending on the level and requirements of each role.
- Safety: Plan and work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, environmental compliance, and other relevant legislation, procedures and guidelines.
- Team focussed: Ability to work in multifaceted teams to deliver solutions to complex problems.
- Solution-Oriented: Possesses a strong analytical mindset with a focus on delivering practical and efficient solutions to a wide range of technical obstacles. Understand how to apply a range of technical and diagnostic methods to identify problems and to achieve solutions.
- Ownership: Take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work in the area of responsibility.
- Theoretical understanding: Apply appropriate engineering, mathematical and scientific principles.
- Communication: Ability to communicate technical information clearly and succinctly to a wide variety of stakeholders, in a variety of methods, for example verbally or in presentation or written format.
- Training: Deliver technical training to others in the use of materials/equipment/tools and processes to meet the needs of the audience.
- A willingness to learn: Ability to adapt to new technologies is also highly valued.
- Professional registration: Technical staff joining the University without professional registration will be supported to obtain this.

Our technical career route provides a map of what technical roles and skills look like across the different grades and disciplines at the University. It’s designed to help you plan your career progression from Assistant Technician to Senior Technical Specialist or Senior Technical Manager. We provide a range of programmes and learning modules to support your development, enhance your skills, and to help you reach your full potential.
We also run an annual appraisal scheme that provides an opportunity to meet with your manager to reflect on your previous 12 months, explore development opportunities and agree objectives for the year ahead.
