Overview

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in a team at the forefront of Additive Manufacturing? The University of Sheffield’s AMRC North West is seeking an exceptionally skilled and ambitious Tech Fellow in Additive Manufacturing to lead our dynamic and rapidly expanding team. This is your opportunity to work with world-class technology and drive projects that are shaping the future of manufacturing.

Based within the AMRC North West Additive Manufacturing group, you will take full responsibility for the technical delivery of a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge projects. Your work might span design, process simulation, material characterisation, process monitoring and control, as well as post-processing techniques including heat treatment, machining and surface finishing. 

You will play a key role in coordinating project scoping, setup, execution and close-out, while providing expert insight across a wide range of AM technologies. Beyond delivering high-quality technical outcomes, you will help secure a sustainable pipeline of research, build strong industrial and government partnerships, and support growth of the AMRC NW order book. Maintaining the AMRC’s international reputation for excellence will be central to your leadership.

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Technical responsibility of delivering numerous concurrent projects, for a range of partners and funding bodies, although a specific requirement to deliver key projects for strategic partners will be required to be undertaken, expanded to a wider delivery team.

  • Lead the identification of funding opportunities, develop high-quality proposals, and establish and manage collaborative consortia to secure resources that drive strategic research and technology development mainly in metallic Additive Manufacturing.

  • Line management of a team . This includes setting team targets and completing annual SRDS reviews.

  •  
  • Report directly to the Head of Additive Manufacturing or Senior Technical Fellow on the performance of the teams and project progress against agreed measures and targets.

  • Regular communication and formal reporting to project teams, stakeholders and customers.

  •  Accountability for the technical decision making within your area of responsibility and correct understanding of the how and when to escalate. 

  • Develop technical solutions and ideas for project staff to adopt and progress in the field of AM processes.

  • Establish a reputation for being the world-class solution provider in the field of AM.

  • Develop a clear strategic plan of engagement/representation at relevant conferences and disseminate information about new technologies and trends which will result in new research projects and commercial opportunities.

  • Provide AMRC partners with confidence, support and value for money.

  • Support the project teams in risk management and mitigation, and escalate issues in a timely manner. 

  • Provide stakeholder and senior management communication of project status.

  • Maintain a high reputation through the projects delivery and customer engagement.

  • Lead and guide others to be technically competent, take initiative and be innovative.
