Overview
This NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in infectious diseases has been awarded to The School of Medicine and Population Health at The University of Sheffield as part of the prestigious UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/ Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career in infectious diseases, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training. It offers the opportunity to combine clinical training in infectious diseases with a programme of post-doctoral research, providing 50% clinical and 50% academic time. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that the post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire rotation in infectious diseases to train for a combined CCT in Infectious Diseases and either Medical Microbiology (MM), Medical Virology (MV) or General Internal Medicine (GIM).
You will have evidence of academic achievement and will hold an MD / PhD or equivalent, have MRCP or equivalent and hold or be eligible to hold an NTN with at least one year remaining prior to CCT.

Main duties and responsibilities
You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.
Research and Teaching
All members of the academic department are expected to be research active. Infection is a major research theme of the Division of Clinical Medicine. Researchers are clinical and non-clinical academics from infectious diseases, microbiology and respiratory medicine and, with academics in inflammation biology, form the core of the Infection and Immunity theme of the prestigious NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), (a collaboration with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), and the UoS cross-faculty Florey Institute. There is ample opportunity for help with supervision during research but you will be expected to be involved with the process of raising funds for your research. You will be expected to:
- Contribute fully as teacher, researcher and leader, in fulfilment of the ideals of the ‘Sheffield Academic’.
- Contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the school.
- Undertake assessment of students and have personal mentoring responsibilities for a small group of students on the MBChB programme.
- Develop specific research interests to achieve the status of a national / international expert.
- Secure peer-reviewed competitive funding for research projects.
- Achieve an optimal standard of academic contribution by publishing research findings in high ranking scientific and specialty journals and routinely appraising the literature.
- Obtain funding to establish your own research team and begin the transition to independent investigator.
- Gain experience and expertise in giving academic seminars and lectures.
- Develop time-management skills and achieve a balance between clinical, research and teaching duties throughout the appointment and beyond.

Clinical
- In-patient management of patients suffering from unselected community acquired infection, travel related infections and immunocompromised patients with and without HIV and AIDS
- Outpatient management of HIV, chronic viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, pre-travel medicine and vaccination and service delivery for OPAT patients.
- Infectious diseases consult service (on both the RHH and NGH sites), and audit & administration.
- On-call duties in Infectious Diseases would be 1:9 non-resident for 24 hours during clinical time including evenings, Saturday and Sunday, subject to timetabling.
- Taking part in organising delivery of the core curriculum in infectious diseases, seminars, the bi-weekly postgraduate meetings and regional meetings and shared responsibility with the other ID trainees for the junior doctor rota.
- Involvement in Infectious Diseases and Interdisciplinary Audit - preparation and presentations, as well as morbidity and mortality meetings.

The successful candidate will be allocated an Educational Supervisor in Infectious Diseases/MM/MV/GIM as appropriate to their NTN.
Conditions of service at STH
The successful candidate will work in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and they will be expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and take note of the standing orders and financial instructions. So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post-holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues. The post-holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post-holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care. The successful candidate will be required to maintain his/her place of residence in contact by telephone and not more than 10 miles by road from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, unless prior specific approval to a greater distance is given by the Trust.
Administration
You will be required to undertake administrative work in support of the needs of the School of Medicine and Population Health and The University of Sheffield. Administrative duties will be determined with the educational supervisor but should not detract from your research needs.

The post is split 50/50 clinical/research. The split of clinical and research activities will be organised according to the candidate’s needs in conjunction with the clinical and academic teams.
