Overview

As the Health & Safety Officer and local Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS)

 

you will provide a professional, enthusiastic, high quality and comprehensive health and safety risk management to the project. A key part of your role will be promoting the positive health and safety behaviours needed to deliver a high-performing health and safety environment to meet the requirements of professional competence, legislation and University policy. You will be responsible for ensuring

that all staff, students and visitors have access to appropriate health and safety training and will ensure that breaches of legislation and/or University policy are reported, challenged and resolved. Your actions will contribute to a positive safety culture, in which incidents are reported openly and used as learning opportunities to improve working practice.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Act with the delegated authority of the Head of Environment, Health and Safety regarding matters (routine and urgent), escalating as appropriate.
  • Work with relevant colleagues to develop, implement and annually review H&S arrangements in line with University H&S policy and guidance, with reference to best practice.
  • Review the project’s activities in relation to University Health, Safety and Environmental policies, advising and overseeing their implementation.
  • Conduct on-site audits to monitor compliance and support implementation with University health and safety policies (including equipment operation, H&S records, housekeeping and the use of personal protective equipment).
  • Arrange and conduct regular H&S inspections, recording findings and

ensuring appropriate action is taken, reporting significant findings as appropriate to monitor activity and ensure that adequate precautions are taken in relation to new activities.

  • Lead the Department’s preparation for H&S audits carried out by the central Health and Safety team, ensuring reports are made by the due date.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents ensuring that all necessary reports are made to the University Safety Services and recommended actions are carried out.
  • Working with relevant colleagues, coordinate and deliver H&S training, ensuring that appropriate H&S training/induction of staff and visitors is provided and records are maintained.
  • Ensure radiation equipment is correctly registered and the RPS liaison is notified.
  • Ensure radiation / monitoring equipment is correctly calibrated and maintained, undertaking checks (incl. pre-use) as appropriate.
  • As local RPS, provide supervision to ensure work is carried out according to approved safe systems of work (incl. local rules and controls outlined in the risk assessment).
  • Monitor arrangements for fire prevention and first aid to ensure adequate cover.
  • Represent the project at AMRC H&S Committees, assisting in setting the agenda and following up on actions.
  • Advise on project arrangements for risk assessment (generation, approval & review) and SOPs. Monitor to ensure that documents are suitable & sufficient. Provide support for employee induction and training and work with the Head of EHS to ensure suitable monitoring and enforcement of safety requirements.
