Overview

An opportunity has arisen for a person with excellent IT and AV skills to join the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) IT Team on a fixed term, part time basis (3 days a week/21 hours). This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for an interesting next step in their IT career, working across all 3 IT support lines within large, complex projects.

 

As Senior IT Technician - Projects, you will be embedded within the AMRC and AMRC Training Centre IT team. You will provide specialist day-to-day support to specific projects / facilities and will become a focal point for project staff and external partners. You will coordinate with the wider IT team in order to support projects PCs, printers, laptops, networks, data storage, servers, and AV equipment - as well as software and licences.

 

You will provide technical expertise and guidance to your projects proposing and implementing improvements to project IT systems as required to ensure a continual high quality IT service.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Act as lead IT technician for your assigned projects, coordinating additional IT team resources as appropriate / as required in agreement with IT Management.

  • Provide advice and guidance on a range of technical issues across the project's activities.

  • Take responsibility for providing a comprehensive, enthusiastic and high-quality IT Support service to project staff, external stakeholders, associated facilities and IT equipment.

  • Be a point of escalation for all IT matters within your specific projects.

  • Write and maintain standard operating procedures for project IT activities, to ensure appropriate resources from the wider IT team can cover your role efficiently as required.

  • Work with information security / assurance colleagues to understand and adhere to policy and processes related to projects and facilities - particularly related to technical change.

  • Install, configure and support a range of standard and specialised IT and AV hardware and software - especially with regards to their specific implementations on your projects.

  • Support the wider IT team with business as usual IT activities as project commitments allow.

  • Under the leadership of IT Management, lead the development and implementation of significant technical infrastructure that underpins the IT Strategy.

  • In collaboration with IT Management, pipeline new system requests, coordinating university and IT resources, vendors and engineers for efficient project delivery, providing realistic timescales and detailed work breakdown plans with the support of the wider team.

  • Input into other projects as appropriate, ensuring technical considerations are managed appropriately throughout.

  • Identify opportunities for improvements to IT systems and processes, raising with IT Management as appropriate, otherwise resolving and improving.

  • Undertake continued professional development.

  • Champion the University of Sheffield IT Code of Practice / Code of Connection.

  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Essential criteria

  • Have a good honours degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or demonstrable equivalent experience in IT roles (assessed at: application).

  • Extensive experience of providing effective and efficient IT Support (assessed at: application).

  • Ability to manage own workload with regards to major projects (assessed at: interview).

  • Experience working within a highly regulated environment and working with technical and procedure based controls (assessed at: application/interview).

  • Experience of managing a large fleet of endpoints, packaging applications for silent deployment using an asset lifecycle management system e.g. Dell/Quest KACE, Microsoft SCCM, Sysprep (assessed at: interview).

  • Extensive experience supporting Microsoft Windows 10, Mac, Android, iOS and other OS’s for client deployment, imaging, fault finding and fault resolution (assessed at: application/interview).

  • Must be able to work in the UK without restrictions in accordance with UK National Law and be prepared to successfully undertake an appropriate level of UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government National Security Vetting criteria (assessed at: application).

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, communicating to staff at all levels the organisation’s strategic plan and their personal contribution towards it (assessed at: application/interview).

  • Excellent customer service skills, with experience of being a highly visible member of an IT team, responding efficiently to enquiries (assessed at: interview).

  • Ability to develop creative and elegant approaches to technical problem solving with an appreciation of longer-term implications (assessed at: interview).

  • Experience of adapting your own skills to new circumstances (assessed at: interview).

 

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to travel on an adhoc basis from the AMRC Facilities in Rotherham to other AMRC sites for team meetings and training (assessed at: application/interview).
