Overview

 

The award-winning Department of Estates & Facilities Management (EFM) at the University of Sheffield is responsible for maintaining the University’s building, facilities and grounds, managing its property and facilities and procuring new buildings. 

 

We are seeking a customer-focused individual with the ability to quickly build and maintain excellent working relationships to join our friendly team. You will act as an ambassador for the University by providing a highly visible presence and service around campus, interacting with students, staff, visitors and members of the public and will be motivated by providing a high standard of customer care and by working in a diverse and ever-changing environment.

 

You will work under the direction of the Car Parking team. You will undertake a wide variety of tasks based around the University Campus to ensure safe car parking and traffic management on a day-to-day basis. Working outdoors, you will be responsible for the patrolling of university car parks and pedestrianised areas on an area rotation basis checking vehicles for correct, safe parking and valid permits and dealing with traffic infringements. A significant element of the role is to move around the University campus on foot, and at all times of the year, however there will be times when you will need to move across wider work locations using University vehicles.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Patrol car parks and pedestrianised areas on foot or by vehicle checking that vehicles are parked safely, appropriately and are displaying the valid permit necessary for each identified parking area.
  • Understand and apply the parking and traffic management rules, policies, and guidelines in order to proportionately address offending behaviour/action.   
  • Use a handheld device to access the vehicle database checking the status of vehicles and issuing warnings/PCN’s as appropriate, gathering the necessary evidence including photographs to assist with any action and/or future appeal. 
  • Judge and record when it is appropriate to allow exceptional action in terms of parking to facilitate essential work/access assessing need and requirements, safety and legitimacy. 
  • Help manage appropriate and safe access to the campus of courier/delivery/contractor vehicles taking into account current policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Reserve parking spaces and/or cordon off parking areas as necessary when instructed to do so by your supervisor/manager.
  • Act as an ambassador for the University by helping and advising visitors with parking enquiries and general information, responding to queries in a helpful and professional manner.
  • Address customers (including offending drivers) in a calm, firm and positive but professional manner and as directed by operating standards, particularly in difficult situations.
  • Help to protect against vehicle crime and other criminality by advising drivers and being alert and observant, identifying and reporting suspicious circumstances and individuals, vulnerable property or locations, including reporting instances of graffiti and other Anti-Social Behaviour.
  • Assist in identifying bicycles that have been left in inappropriate locations/abandoned or may be at risk of theft.
  • Help to keep parking areas clean by removing litter, emptying refuse bins and liaising with other services to manage recycling bins, special waste etc.  Assist in clearing ice and snow across campus, using gritting and snow-clearing equipment as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and your manager/supervisor to coordinate daily activities.
  • Proactively identify issues and improvements to the role and to parking services directing suggestions to your manager/supervisor. 
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post.
