Overview

Are you an experienced oral surgeon or a skilled dental practitioner(with minor oral surgery expertise) looking to inspire the next generation of clinical professionals? The University of Sheffield’s School of Clinical Dentistry is seeking an exceptional clinician to join our team.

A core focus of this role is delivering high-quality clinical supervision and supporting oral surgery education for Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) undergraduates. Your day-to-day clinical teaching will centre on exodontia, minor oral surgery, and local anaesthesia delivery within our undergraduate clinics , alongside occasional sessions within the Acute Adult Dental Care (AADC) service.

We are looking for a colleague who is fully confident in independently executing routine and complex surgical extractions, managing clinical complications, and fostering a safe, encouraging learning environment. An appropriate honorary clinical contract will be requested from the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties and responsibilities

As a core member of our teaching team, your responsibilities will span across education, direct patient care, and clinical governance:

• Inspiring Education: Deliver engaging clinical and didactic teaching to BDS undergraduates, Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), and postgraduate students as directed by the Teaching Lead.
• Clinical Supervision: Provide expert, real-time supervision during practical sessions in exodontia, minor oral surgery, local anaesthesia, and acute care.
• Patient Safety & Quality: Take direct responsibility for patient safety and treatment outcomes during student sessions, stepping in to deliver direct care when necessary to optimise both learning and patient welfare.
• Student Progression: Conduct student assessments, offer constructive feedback, and act as an exemplary ethical role model for future dental professionals.
• Clinical Continuity: Support patient assessment and emergency clinics, ensuring high standards of secondary care delivery, particularly during student vacation periods.
• Governance & Growth: Actively participate in clinical governance, staff development programmes, and the University’s Staff Review and Development Scheme (SRDS).

Essential criteria

• Registration with the General Dental Council (GDC).
• Fellow in Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons (FDSRCS) or an equivalent qualification.
• Substantial relevant post-qualifying clinical experience in oral surgery.
• Proven proficiency in routine/surgical dental extractions, management of routine dento-alveolar complications, management of any related complications and local anaesthesia delivery.
• Experience of mentoring or training members of the dental team to support their career progression.
• Evidence of an active, sustained portfolio of high-quality Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work confidently under your own initiative and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• A strong commitment to, and understanding of, evidence-based dentistry.
• The ability to establish excellent, empathetic professional relationships with patients, students, and colleagues.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan, progress, and assess clinical resources effectively.

Desirable criteria

• Prior experience delivering clinical teaching within an oral surgery or urgent dental care setting.
• A clear working awareness of University and NHS dental education structures and environments.
