Overview
This NIHR academic clinical lecturer position is an exciting opportunity to combine clinical training with a programme of postdoctoral research, providing 50% clinical and 50% academic time. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that this post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)]. The individual will join the School of Medicine and Population Health and conduct Research in Children and Young People at The University of Sheffield. The Medical School combines strong basic and clinical science groups to create a major focus on translational research. The candidate’s research should be aligned with the School’s Research Themes.

You will develop your own research program supervised and supported by Clinical Academics, Academics (basic scientist) or Consultants with an honorary academic contract. You will conduct clinical training in the South Yorkshire Deanery and provide middle grade clinical on-call duties at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals. The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training.
Doctors with specialist/ty experience that meet the entry criteria into specialty training may apply to this scheme; however, to take up this academic CL post you must demonstrate clinical competence for the award of a national training number (NTN). If a current NTN is not held, candidates will need to clinically benchmark before taking up the post. Clinical benchmarking can be achieved through application for specialty training within the national recruitment window where the minimal appointable score must be achieved. Trainees are responsible for ensuring that their clinical application is submitted within the appropriate recruitment round to ensure that they are benchmarked before the date that the post needs to commence.

Main duties and responsibilities
You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.
Research and Teaching
All members of the academic department are expected to be research active. The successful individual is strongly encouraged to align their research with the School of Medicine and Population Health Research themes. There is ample opportunity for help with supervision during research, but you will be expected to be involved with the process of raising funds for your research. You will be expected to:
- Contribute fully as teacher, researcher and leader, in fulfilment of the ideals of the ‘Sheffield Academic’.
- Develop a specific research interest to achieve the status of a national / international expert, supervised by one of the senior members the Medical School. Ideally, clinical work can be undertaken in support of clinical research e.g. recruiting through OPD clinics etc.
- Contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the Medical School.
- Undertake assessment of students and have personal mentoring responsibilities for a small group of students on the MBChB programme.
- Secure peer-reviewed competitive funding for research projects.
- Achieve an optimal standard of academic contribution by publishing research findings in high ranking scientific and specialty journals and routinely appraising the literature.
- Gain experience and expertise in giving academic seminars and lectures.
Clinical
Clinical duties will comprise those normally expected of a middle-grade doctor, including cover of the paediatric ward, neonatal unit, attendance at the Emergency Department and out-patient clinics commensurate with the grade of the post.
You will undertake clinical work that is relevant to the training of a specialist in your chosen speciality, including in-patient management, ward rounds, and out-patient clinics and participation in multidisciplinary team activity as well as required procedures in your chosen subspeciality. You may be asked to participate in the general on-call rota in support of achieving your level 3 competencies. It is anticipated that you will undertake your clinical and research activities according to your needs.
Administration
You will be required to undertake administrative work in support of the needs of the School of Medicine and Population Health and The University of Sheffield. Administrative duties will be determined with the educational supervisor but should not detract from your research needs.

This post will be supported by excellent facilities for research and academic office accommodation and access to administrative support.
Outline of Typical Week / Job Plan
The post is split 50/50 clinical/research. The split of clinical and research activities will be organised according to the candidate’s needs in conjunction with the clinical and academic teams.

The University Clinical Library is housed on ‘C’ Floor of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The Medical Library is in the main University Library which is within half a mile of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and offers excellent lending reference and national lending (Boston Spa) facilities.
