Overview
We are seeking a motivated and culturally sensitive Research Assistant to join an exciting BMA-funded project exploring barriers and facilitators to timely dementia diagnosis in South Asian and Black minority ethnic communities. This mixed-methods study combines a systematic literature review with in-depth ethnographic case studies to identify practical strategies for improving inclusivity in Memory Assessment Services.
You will work alongside Dr Hina Khan (Principal Investigator) and Dr Alys Griffiths (Supervisor), supporting all aspects of the research process from literature review to data collection and dissemination. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop advanced qualitative research skills, work with diverse communities, and contribute to impactful research on health inequalities.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Conduct systematic literature searches and contribute to a meta-ethnographic review.
- Support recruitment of participants in collaboration with NHS Memory Services and community partners.
- Carry out non-participant observations, informal interviews, and focus groups.
- Maintain accurate field notes, transcriptions, and secure data management.
- Analyse qualitative data using NVivo and thematic analysis.
- Contribute to publications, community workshops, and dissemination activities.
- Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post
The role will be based at SITraN (University of Sheffield). Some travel is involved for data collection and is based at Sheffield NHS Trust sites, as well as occasional patient engagement and dissemination. Hybrid, part-time and flexible working is welcome and can be discussed at interview; however, it is expected that staff are regularly on site as required to support the project and the broader research community.
