Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced individual for the position of Research Assistant in Prof. Helen Bryant’s laboratory, within a vibrant scientific environment at the University of Sheffield. We take an innovative approach with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research using 2D and 3D models of cancer to test novel therapeutics for cancer. The principal aim of this exciting project is to develop novel photodynamic therapy drugs for oral cancer. You will contribute fundamental new insights into how these agents work and their preclinical testing.
You will have an MSc (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant subject and be competent in a variety of molecular/cellular biology techniques. You should have a keen interest in research focussed on drug development and testing. Previous experience of mammalian cell culture and fluorescence microscopy are essential, experience of more complex 3D models and in vivo testing is desirable.
You will be integrated within a broader network of dynamic, enthusiastic researchers including Clinical staff, Biologists and Chemists. Your career development will be well supported, and specific training will be provided where necessary.
Main duties and responsibilities
● Plan and undertake the research and development necessary to achieve the aims of the project. Including cell culture, microscopy and in vivo studies.
● Contribute to the writing of research reports, progress reports, presentations and any other reporting obligations.
● Disseminate the results via journals, conference presentations, and project meetings.
● Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
● Develop his/her scientific background, specialist knowledge and scientific contacts.
● Participate in project meetings.
● Attend national and international conferences and workshops to present the research results to a wider audience and stay up to date with current advances in the field.
● Maintain comprehensive, accurate and tidy records of research work, cell lines usage, etc.
● Assist with maintenance of lab databases, including CoSHH, stocks, etc.
● Attend all required safety and training courses, and comply with required safety, licensing and ethical regulations at all times.
● Collaborate with the project partners.
● Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post
