Overview

 

This post is funded by the Quantum Computing Hub (QCI3) supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The QCi3 Hub is part of Phase III of the UK’s Quantum Technologies Programme and is a five-year project with £22.4 million total funding for a consortium of 17 institutions and over 50 research groups. The task of the theory group led by Prof Kyriienko at the University of Sheffield within the consortium is to lead nationally the development of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms. The research will involve designing innovative QML approaches and collaborating with other groups to run them on existing quantum hardware. In addition, this will include running simulations of quantum circuits, testing performance on noisy simulators, and developing new use-cases. This position assumes being a part of the strong collaborative research network across the UK, and the ability to co-lead the delivery of the quantum machine learning task.

 

You should have a strong background in theoretical physics, quantum computing, or machine learning and have completed or be in the final stages of a PhD in this or a related discipline. 



Main duties and responsibilities 

 

  • Design and analyse quantum machine learning protocols for supervised and generative modelling tasks.

  • Compose quantum circuits for implementing and testing quantum machine learning models.

  • Perform simulations of QML protocols in the presence of noise using various approaches.

  • Test protocols at available quantum hardware and work with experimental colleagues to assess its performance.

  • Attend regular meetings of the research group, and prepare reports on your work, including analysis of previous results and outlook for the future studies.

  • Interact and closely collaborate with colleagues in the group, contributing to the team effort to meet objectives and use laboratory time efficiently.

  • Provide supervision to junior researchers including master students and PhD students.

  • Write manuscripts based on your work and the team’s work for research journals.

  • Present work at QCi3 Hub meetings and other external scientific meetings, planning well ahead of the deadline.

  • Organise time to ensure very good knowledge of the background of the area of research, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant literature.

  • Be capable of planning your own research activities in discussion with your supervisor, incorporating issues such as the availability of resources, deadlines, project milestones and overall research aims.

  • As a member of staff you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.

Essential criteria

 

  • PhD in quantum physics with a focus on quantum computing (assessed at: application/interview)
