Overview
We are seeking an outstanding Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases to join the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield. This joint University–NHS role offers a unique opportunity to combine internationally recognised research, with high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and consultant-level clinical practice within a leading tertiary infectious diseases service. Based in the Clinical Infection Research Group within SMPH, you will play a key role in strengthening the University’s research profile in infection and immunity, contributing to the cross-faculty Florey Institute of Infection and the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre to shape the next generation of clinicians and researchers.
Main duties and responsibilities
Research
- Conduct innovative and high-quality research and scholarship that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour and is aligned to the strategic direction of the University, the Florey Institute of Infection, and the Sheffield NIHR BRC Infection and Immunity Theme.
- Disseminate research findings through conference presentations and publications in recognised high-quality/peer reviewed journals, ensuring that research activities align with REF, outputs, impact and environment.
- Develop funding strategies, pursue income generation and secure competitive research grants from national and international funders.
- Contribute to the research profile of the Florey Institute of Infection and the Sheffield NIHR BRC by developing and leading programmes of work.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
- Lead and contribute to the mentoring and training of clinical and non-clinical early career researchers, optimising success of external fellowship/grant awards while sustaining a flourishing research environment.
Teaching
- Contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the Faculty of Health.
- Carry out course evaluations including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving performance.
- Be involved with the assessment and mentoring of students.
- Carry out a pastoral role for students and clinical trainees such as acting as Personal Tutor, Educational and/or Clinical Supervisor.
- Act where appropriate in Faculty/School/Divisional committees in order to contribute to the development of teaching/learning policy locally.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research.
Job plan and Clinical commitments
This post will comprise of 10 programmed activities, of which 5 will be NHS PAs and 5 will be funded for University of Sheffield activities. Clinical PAs will include Direct Clinical Care and SPAs. The precise weekly timetable will be subject to negotiation with the Clinical Lead and Lead for the Section of Infection and Immunity. Within the clinical aspects of the post, you will be expected to maintain exemplary clinical skills, expertise and standards appropriate to a tertiary specialist unit and in line with GMC guidance on good clinical practice. Participation in clinical audit, multidisciplinary team meetings, mentoring, support and training of NHS staff will be proportionate to the clinical time available. The exact clinical duties undertaken as part of this post will be following discussion with the Clinical Lead, Dr. Rachel Foster.
You will also be expected to comply with the CPD requirements of the Royal College of Physicians along with appraisal and revalidation.
Leadership and management
- Provide effective leadership that supports staff development and motivation.
- Grow the external recognition of the School and University through academic achievement and involvement in external professional activities such as refereeing papers, editing major journals, refereeing research grants, external examining, organising or contributing to international conferences, advising on national and international boards and groups or on policy, or being elected to national or international societies, Royal Colleges etc.
Support
Academic administrative support is available and NHS secretarial support will be provided from existing resources within the Directorate for clinical work.
