Overview

A position has arisen for a Senior Lecturer/Senior Study Manager for Oncology based in the Sheffield Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU).

Sheffield CTRU has received substantial infrastructure funding to grow and diversify its portfolio of multi-centre cancer clinical trials. The post holder will be responsible for trial design, grant development, and submission, as well as oversight of Quality Assurance and senior-level study implementation, with a specific focus on oncology-based CTIMPs (Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products). You will work closely with the CTRU Academic Lead for Oncology, CTRU staff and Chief Investigators to secure research funding and ensure that studies under your supervision are implemented in accordance with randomised controlled trial scientific principles, the study protocols, and regulatory standards.

You will provide oversight of all CTRU input into the specialist oncology studies within your portfolio, ensuring that all services provided by the Unit are compliant with professional, national, and international regulatory frameworks.

Experience of project-managing large, multi-centre cancer clinical trials is essential. We are seeking a candidate with a proven track record of working within the oncology research field, possessing a deep understanding of the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations as they apply to complex cancer research.

Main duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

• Support the Director of the Sheffield Clinical Trials Research Unit and the Academic Lead for Oncology Trials in the overall management and strategic delivery of the infrastructure grant, ensuring that the project meets its key milestones and deliverables.
• Developing a specialist portfolio of oncology research in collaboration with clinical investigators through designing studies, submitting research applications, and securing grants.
• Acting as the senior CTRU representative (CTRU Lead) for studies, liaising with oncology Chief Investigators, clinicians, research collaborators, and methodologists.
• Ensuring the cancer research studies for which you are the CTRU lead are undertaken in accordance with randomised controlled trial scientific principles and the protocol.
• Overseeing all CTRU input into the oncology portfolio for which you are the CTRU lead.
• Supervision of trial managers, particularly managers of oncology CTIMP studies.
• Overseeing Quality Assurance processes within the Oncology portfolio.
• Under your supervision, ensuring that regulatory standards and specialized oncology pharmacovigilance procedures (including reporting of complex Adverse Events common in cancer trials) on all CTRU CTIMPs are adhered to.
• Under your supervision, ensuring compliance with research ethics, the Medicines for Human Use Clinical Trials Regulations (2004), clinical governance, data protection, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
• If required, lead on preparation for and response to (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) MHRA inspections, specifically regarding the oncology portfolio.
• Lead on the preparation of papers for high-impact oncology and academic journals.
• Lead on the presentation of findings at international cancer conferences and academic forums.
• Hold responsibility for delivery of studies within agreed timescales and funding.
• Undertake undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and supervision, within the School of Medicine and Population Health.
• Undertake post-graduate research supervision and examining as required.
• You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching and research, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.
