Overview

As a Technician, reporting to the School Safety Officer and interactions with the School Technical Manager, you will operate and maintain a wide range of fundamental, but essential business systems including the University’s financial system SAP to process a range of transactions including “goods Inwards /receipt” and asset register maintenance. You will also PAT and visually inspect incoming electrical equipment, and record relevant purchases You will support the Department Safety Officer to ensure appropriate action is taken to maintain a safe working environment. This includes advising colleagues on the safe disposal of WEEE, chemical and other waste and keeping relevant records to meet legal obligations. You will also be responsible for arranging assistance from the University facility assistants via the PlanOn system. 

 

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Operate an effective goods inward service, maintain relevant records of incoming goods and contact staff and students to arrange collection.
  • Check and process delivery notes from members of staff and students within the School and goods receipt through the SAP system. Visually inspect and PAT incoming electronic equipment and record on the asset database.
  • Act as the School Telephone Liaison Officer (TLO) and University Directory Maintainer for the School.
  • Manage swipe card access and ensure staff and students are authorised to have access to labs and facilities by liaising with line managers and technical team.
  • Manage Facilities Managements requests for the School, point of contact for building and office fault reporting, providing an efficient service and link between EFM and the client.
  • Responsible for allocating resources when required such as keys, office furniture, swipe access for all starters and leavers in the School.
  • Control key cutting within the School and stays within the budget.
  • Deal with ad hoc queries regarding disposal of waste, including WEEE, Chemical and other waste (metal and timber), ensure records of disposal are kept to meet legal requirements and University procedures.
  • Deal with ad hoc queries relating to movements of furniture, equipment.
  • Undertake small scale departmental moves, where possible engaging University Faculty Assistants to undertake work (via PlanOn)
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the research laboratory/ Workshop specialism of the role.

Essential criteria

  • Experience equivalent to Level 3 (BTEC/A Level) qualification in a relevant field, with proven vocational skills inline with the job description.
  • Hold a city and guilds portable appliance testing certificate
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • Experience: with Common IT applications, for example Word, Excel and Google networked office applications.
  • Experience of using computer based financial systems, for example SAP.
  • Excellent Customer service skills, with experience of responding efficiently to enquiries by a work based system (topdesk), email or enquiries in person. 
  • Strong customer service ethos with the ability to to assess and organise resources, plan and progress work activity.

Desirable criteria 

  • Experience of working safely with chemicals and or industrial gasses
  • Professional Registration

Salary: £27,319 - 31,236, with potential to progress to £33,951
