Overview

 

The School of Computer Science invites applications for two University Teacher positions to support and enhance our taught curriculum.

 

Our Teaching Specialist team, led by Prof Emma Norling, is renowned for delivering high-quality teaching, assessment and feedback. Joining this team, you will benefit from mentorship by experienced faculty and contribute to our reputation for innovative and engaging teaching practices.

 

In this role, you will play a key part in enriching the educational experience of undergraduate and postgraduate students across our Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence programmes. You will help maintain the high standards of teaching excellence for which our school is known.

Main duties and responsibilities

 

  • Conceive of, create and deliver innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment in the areas of computer science and software engineering, with a particular focus on the core computing curriculum, inclusive teaching and assessment methods, and students transitioning into the University environment.
  • Keep abreast of developments in industry best practice to maintain relevance to course materials.
  • Devise new activities to ensure that the student experience is engaging, up-to-date and relevant.
  • Provide effective feedback to students, in line with University standards and Faculty conventions.
  • Act as a source of teaching excellence for the staff in the school and the wider Faculty of Engineering.
  • Be responsible for leading and guiding a team of Graduate Teaching Assistants and Student Ambassadors who deliver laboratory classes across a range of subjects and support outreach work.
  • Assist the technical and administrative teams in timetabling, scheduling and supporting activities throughout the year.
  • Plan and prioritise your own daily work.
  • You will make a full and active contribution to the principles of the ‘Sheffield Academic’. These include the achievement of excellence in applied teaching, and scholarly pursuits to make a genuine difference in the subject area and to the University’s achievements as a whole.
  • As a member of staff, you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.

Essential criteria

 

  • A PhD in computer science or a related subject area (assessed at application).
  • Proficiency in teaching computer science topics and assessing student performance (assessed at application, presentation and interview).
  • Project-management skills to ensure timely delivery of multiple projects without close supervision (assessed at application and interview).
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including report writing skills and experience of delivering presentations (assessed at application, presentation and interview).
  • Strong persuasion and influencing skills to drive improvement and manage change in teaching practice (assessed at interview).
  • Ability to create clear instructions to encourage student engagement and learning (assessed at presentation and interview).
  • Ability to assist others to devise, build and deliver innovative and effective teaching solutions (assessed at application and interview).
  • Ability to deliver new and effective practical experiences for students (assessed at application, presentation and interview).

 

Desirable criteria

 

  • Expertise in developing and implementing e-learning solutions and using modern technologies to enhance student learning (assessed at application and interview).
  • Ability to encourage and educate academic staff in new learning, teaching and assessment methods (assessed at application, presentation and interview).

Salary: £48,149 - £57,422, with potential to progress to £64,605 through sustained exceptional contribution

Next steps in the recruitment process

It is anticipated that the first stage of the selection process will take place on 28th April 2025. This will consist of a presentation, informal meetings with key members of staff, and a tour of the Diamond building. We plan to let candidates know if they have progressed to the selection stage on the week commencing 14th April 2025.

Following this stage successful candidates will be invited to interview, which is the final stage of selection. Interviews are expected to take place on 13th May 2025.
